Panel I. The Energy Union as a driver of the modernisation of EU’s economy |

The Energy Union aims to make energy more secure, affordable and sustainable. The completion of the Energy Union requires engagement and close cooperation between the European Commission, Member States and society as a whole. The aim of the Commission is to complete the Energy Union by the end of its current mandate in 2019. In order to achieve this ambitious goal Member States will need to finalise the draft integrated national energy and climate plans for the post-2020 period by early 2018. As we move towards the modernisation of the European economy and energy supply, Director General for Energy together with representatives of the Member States will evaluate the state of the Energy Union and its progress from their perspectives. They will also discuss recent EU legislative proposals and outcomes from the second Energy Union Tour. |

Panel II. The SET Plan as a driver of the energy transition: achievements in Energy R&I and the way forward |

The SET Plan was launched in 2007 with the aims, first, to accelerate knowledge development and technology transfer and up-take within the EU; second, to maintain EU industrial leadership on low-carbon energy technologies; and third, to foster science and research for transforming energy technologies to achieve the Energy and Climate Change policy goals. Over the past 10 years the SET Plan has delivered and placed the acceleration of clean energy innovation among the top political priorities at EU and global levels. The coordination among European countries, research and industry, the identification of synergies among national research programmes and priority areas for joint action are at the core of the SET Plan. The panel will discuss the progress achieved in the energy transition placing Europe at the forefront of the next generation of innovative low-carbon technologies as well as the way ahead to meet the goals of the Energy Union in the years to come. |

Climate change is a global challenge jointly addressed by the nations of the world under the Paris Agreement. The EU is a global leader in energy science and technology, and a leading voice in global debates. The EU engages in science diplomacy and worldwide scientific collaboration. The panel will discuss these aspects and major initiatives contributing to accelerate the pace and uptake of clean energy technologies to tackle climate change. Mission Innovation provides the frame for a close collaboration triangle between public sector, businesses and international organisations to create synergies and accelerate clean energy solutions. |

Panel IV. Innovative low-carbon technologies and European competitiveness: financial tools |

The panel will present the main elements of different financial instruments to accelerate the transition to a clean-energy based economy such as InnovFin Energy Demo Projects and the Innovation Fund. A discussion on how they fit the needs of innovative project promoters and the successful commercialisation of novel technologies – in light of the SET Plan implementation and the achievement of its strategic targets – is expected to follow. |
