About Conference
The 10th annual SET Plan conference conjoined with the 11th Central European Energy Conference (CEEC XI) is held under the auspices of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
In 2017 the SET Plan marks its 10th year anniversary. The conference will review the progress achieved in last decade in the energy transition and the key role played by the SET Plan as the technological pillar of the EU energy policy. It will examine the implementation process of the Energy Union with a special focus on the role of its Research and Innovation (R&I) dimension. In particular, it will assess the role of innovative low-carbon technologies in boosting European competiveness, progress in developing new technologies and smart energy systems for efficient use of energy as well as growing share of renewables in the primary energy consumption of EU member states. In addition, it will also evaluate the current trends in electro-mobility, safe utilisation of nuclear energy, enhanced energy storage, and many other topical issues for the transformation of the EU energy system. Finally, the conference will pay special attention to evaluation of the role of Central European member states, including their contribution to the implementation of the goals of the Energy Union and the Integrated SET Plan.
HISTORY OF SET PLAN and CEEC
The first SET Plan conference was held at the Carrousel du Louvre on 28 October 2008 in Paris. It was organized by the IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), two French public research sector bodies, in collaboration with the European Commission. Speakers presented the ambitions of the SET Plan and the challenges to accelerate Research and Innovation in Europe. The conference contained three thematic sessions on Research perspectives, Industry expectations, and Implementation of the SET-Plan. Over the last eight years, the SET Plan has promoted and fostered the exchange of information and knowledge between key decision-makers, industry and research actors and has had a structuring effect in EU and national programmes, orienting investments around selected technologies.
The motivation for organizing the first CEEC conference was the 2006 natural gas crisis. The conference’s nine-year history reflects the major paradigm shift that occurred following the 2006 and 2009 gas crises that has changed the way energy security is viewed in the Visegrad countries and other EU member states. Experience indicates that there is limited space for purely “national” solutions in the energy sector. Good and sustainable solutions are primarily grounded in and depend on regional cooperation among neighbors and on developing shared rules and policies that can be agreed within the EU framework.
The 10th SET Plan conference will run in conjunction with 11th annual Central European Energy Conference (CEEC). The conference program covers all the key energy sector areas which are of immediate importance and the subject of current debates and decision-making. All participants will benefit from the rich and interesting program featuring distinguished speakers.
STRUCTURE
SET Plan – Central European Energy Conference 2017 will feature 10 main panels on the priorities of the Energy Union and SET Plan and 5 parallel thematic evening sessions on related subjects attended by policy-makers and figures from business, science and innovation, civil society and regional and local government. The conference will also include 3 side events held on the day before the main program.
